5 Ways To Have A Relationship With God

Do you want to have a relationship with God, but don’t know how? Read these 5 ways to kickstart your communion with him.

1. Build a Relationship with God Through Prayer

There is no right or wrong way to approach the Father. He just wants you to come to him with your needs and worries. Talk to him, ask him for what you need, and listen for his voice.

If you have never accepted Jesus into your heart as your Savior, start with this prayer:

Dear Jesus, thank you for dying on the cross for my sins. Thank you for raising from the dead! I give you my life and my heart. I believe you are the one true God, and I am ready to follow you. In Jesus name I pray,

Amen.

2. Read the Bible

The bible is your instruction manual for life. David wrote in Psalm 119:105 that the Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.

Not only is it full of wisdom–but as you read it, it will grow your relationship with God.

If you don’t know where to start reading the bible, I recommend starting in either the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John) or the book of Psalms.

I always end my bible reading time feeling refreshed and encouraged. I know that it will be the same for you.

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

James 4:8

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.”

Matthew 26:36

Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

Matthew 11:28-30

Seek the LORD while He may be found,
Call upon Him while He is near.

Isaiah 55:6

3. Worship and Praise God

To give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.

Isaiah 61:3

Worship is powerful. As you worship, it will lead you into God’s presence.

Your mindset will go from worry to worship. Your brain transforms from the place of despair to the place of desiring more of God’s presence.

Praise God for who he is — despite how you feel.

If you don’t know what to say or how to praise, do a quick youtube search of “worship music” and listen. Charity Gayle is my current favorite.

4. Fast To Grow Your Relationship With God

When you are ready to take your relationship with Jesus to a deeper level—fast.

Time and time again in my life when I have needed a mighty move of God, an answer to prayer, or just wanted to be closer to Jesus– fasting would always propel me there.

Fasting means not eating anything.

I believe this is the most biblical definition of the word, fast.

Fast comes from the Greek word: nésteuó and it translates to mean “without food” or “hunger”

When Jesus talks about fasting, he is speaking on starving your flesh and feeding your spirit. Having your spirit rely so heavily on him, causes you to become closer to him.

If you chose to fast, start with fasting breakfast, and spend that time in prayer and reading the Word instead.

Please know that you do not have to fast to have a relationship with God. Fasting takes your relationship with God to the next level.

5. Go To Church

One of the best things you can do to help build your relationship with God is attend a local church. There are countless scriptures that explain the importance of going to church.

When you attend church, you hear the Word of God, you are surrounded by like-minded believers who can encourage you and pray for you, and you will find friends who will influence you in a positive way.

You need strong Christian community.

Why Is It Important To Have A Relationship With Jesus?

It’s one thing to believe in Jesus. It’s another to have a relationship with him.

For me, there is nothing more important in life than my relationship with God.

When you have a true relationship with God, that deep void inside of you will be gone—because it will be filled with Christ.

He created you to long for closeness with him. This is why so many people are look for things to satisfy them.

More money, move love from a boyfriend/husband, the next high, the next vacation, alcohol, shopping sprees…

Nothing will satisfy you until you have a relationship with Jesus Christ.

Jesus is the living water (John 7:37)

And you need water to survive.

You can have a relationship with God. It doesn’t matter what you have done–if you are mad at God, or have cursed his name.

It doesn’t matter if you once loved God, and now are so distant you don’t know where to start.

God desires a personal relationship with you.

He wants to spend time with you! He wants to speak to you. He wants to hear you calling out his name in your time of need.

Jesus loves you.  ❤️

He is waiting to show you how deep how wide, how long how high, is his love for you. (Ephesians 3)
