Does Your Heart Need a Deep Cleaning?

I set out to mop the spots on my floors which were stained with food, fuzz, and other toddler happenings.

Forget the sweeping,” I sarcastically thought to myself.

“Nobody notices the tiny crumbs. “

So I grabbed the mop and kicked the broom out of the way.

As I began to mop, I could see playdoh particles on the floor, dirt + leaves from when my daughter was playing outside, pieces of plastic, and an array of other various things lurking on top of my hardwood.

And still, I was not about to waste the time to sweep that up.

What difference would it make?

All I really wanted was for the floors to be shiny and the food stains no longer visible.

Sweeping would require more effort. Sweeping would require extra time in my process. Sweeping wouldn’t make the floors shiny or smell pleasant. Sweeping would cause me to have to bend over and get the dustpan. It would cause me to to go deep underneath the layers of my couch and furniture.

How To Do A Deep Cleaning of Your Heart

How quickly do we “skip” cleaning up the hidden layers of our hearts? Take time to clean your heart and your soul, and you will find it leaves more space for the goodness of God to reach in.

1. What Sin In Your Life Do You Need To Get Rid of?

Ask God to show you what areas in your life have sin in them. Take a moment to listen for what you hear. Chances are, several things have popped up. Maybe you have thought you could hide it from God and from yourself, but he already knows about it. Nothing can be hidden from him. (Hebrews 4:13)

It’s easier to skip this step– it’s easier to cover up what’s really there. But you won’t be living in full freedom until you have gone through and surrendered every part of yourself to the Lord.

2. Pray And Ask For Forgiveness For Your Sins

“Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew in me a steadfast spirit.”

-Psalm 51:10

King David asks for forgiveness. He recognizes his unclean ways.

Read Psalm 51 in entirety; it’s really beautiful.

Maybe you don’t know how to “clean” the deep layers in your heart, guess what? That’s okay.

Start with a Prayer. You could even pray Psalm 51 aloud.

Psalm 51 was written after King David had been caught having an affair. Even in all David’s power and love for God, he still made a mistake.

3. Know There Is Nothing That Can Make God Love You Less

That there is no sin, no shame, no guilt that can separate you from the love of Christ. (Romans 8:38)

Stop mopping before you sweep. Get rid of the junk in your life. Take a look at your heart, and see what needs to be cleaned. It will bring you closer to your heavenly Father.
